David Raymond Butler

David Raymond Butler, 82, of Smithton, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, in Sedalia, Missouri, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on Thursday, November 26, 1942, in Independence, Missouri, to the late Orville Raymond and Ethel Marie (Shrader) Butler, David lived a life of service, devotion, and generosity.

From 1961 to 1964, he proudly served in the United States Marine Corps as a helicopter mechanic, rising to the rank of Lance Corporal (E-3) and completing two tours during the Vietnam War.

On June 23, 1989, David married the love of his life, Mary Lynn Cunningham, in Liberty, Missouri. Together, they built a beautiful life over 31 years of marriage until Mary’s passing on July 8, 2020.

Together Mary and David had three sons, Anthony, Michael, and Ian, and four daughters, Lisa, Michelle, Kristina, and Shawna while creating a home filled with love and family. Over the years, they lived in Liberty and Independence before settling in Holden in the mid-1990s, later moving to Smithton in 2019.

After his military service, David continued giving back as a volunteer firefighter in the 1970s. His skills and discipline as a Marine led to a long and respected career at Dean Machinery, where he worked as a heavy equipment mechanic until retiring in 2009.

Known for his deep knowledge and patient teaching, he had a gift for mentoring apprentices and students from technical schools, many of whom learned the trade directly from his guidance in the field.

David loved the outdoors and found joy in camping, fishing, gardening, yardwork, and caring for his dogs. Most of all, he cherished time spent with his family. His devotion was especially evident in the way he lovingly cared for Mary in her final days.

With an outgoing personality, a generous spirit, and a heart for others, David left a legacy that will be remembered by all who knew him.

David is survived by his sons, Anthony (Michelle) Butler, Michael Butler, Ian (Debra) Borath; daughters, Lisa Bumgarner, Michelle Butler, Kristina (Sam) Porter, and Shawna (Don) Hayes; brothers, Paul (Susan) Butler, Mark (Sheila) Butler; grandchildren: Amanda Porter, Bethany (Jake) Kearney, Logan (Bre) Hayes, Shannon Hayes, Renata Prado, JD Hayes, John Porter, Darrion (Metaia) Prado, and James Porter; as well as 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Lynn Butler; his parents, Orville and Ethel Butler; sisters, Esther Alley and Frances “Frankie” Robinette.

Graveside services with full military honors were held Saturday, October 4, 2025, at the Holden Cemetery, Holden Missouri, with Pastor Michael Wakeman officiating.
