Eagles Baseball Team Defeats Lexington For Second Conference Win

The Holden Eagle baseball team moved to 2-0 in MRVC-East play with a home win against Lexington by the final score of 13-6 Thursday, Apr. 2.
Holden led the entire game after taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from Cohen Drake that scored Skyler Willis, a run scored by Drake on a stolen base that was followed by a Lexington error, and an RBI from Von Wehmeyer on a sacrifice fly that scored Tucker Kauffman.
Holden added four runs in the second inning an a run in the third as Eagle starting pitcher Destry Powell held the Minutemen scoreless through four innings.
Lexington chipped into Holden’s 8-0 lead by plating four runs in the fifth inning.
Holden held its lead by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth and adding three runs in the sixth to offset two runs scored by Lexington in the top of the seventh.
In the start on the mound for Holden, Powell worked through six innings. Powell allowed 4 runs, 6 hits, and 5 walks while recording 4 strikeouts.
Pitching in relief, Dylan Cornwell allowed 2 runs, 2 hits, and 2 walks while striking out 1 batter.
At the plate for Holden, Cohen Drake had 3 hits and 1 RBI, Skyler Willis and Drake Gard each had 2 hits and 1 RBI, Wes Brown, Von Wehmeyer, and Lane Spoor-Wright each had 1 hit and 2 RBIs, Tucker Kauffman had 1 hit and 1 RBI.
Greyhounds Race To Win Over Eagles
Windsor came from behind in the seventh inning against Holden to give the Greyhounds a win over the Eagles by the final score of 13-7 Tuesday, Mar. 31.
Tucker Kauffman led Holden at the plate versus Windsor with 3 hits and 1 RBI. Wes Brown and Cohen Drake each had 2 hits and 1 RBI. Skyler Willis had 1 hit and 2 RBIs. Von Wehmeyer had 1 hit and 1 RBI.
Eagles Rally Past Panthers To Take MRVC-East Opener
After seeing an early lead disappear on the road at Knob Noster, the Holden Eagles rallied in the seventh inning to defeat the Panthers by the final score of 10-9 Monday, Mar. 30.
Facing a 9-6 deficit entering the seventh inning in the back-and-forth contest, Holden plated four runs in the top of the seventh to regain a 10-9 lead that would hold through a scoreless bottom of the seventh for Knob Noster.
Holden’s early lead was taken when the Eagles scored two runs in the top of the first inning after leadoff hitter Drake Gard was hit by a pitch. Gard’s courtesy runner, Chasen Hall, scored on a triple from Cohen Drake for the first run of the game. A passed ball allowed Drake to score to put Holden ahead 2-0.
Tucker Kauffman followed Drake with a triple before Holden’s half of the frame was ended on two strikeouts.
Knob Noster plated four runs in the bottom of the second inning and added two runs in the fourth to put Holden in a 6-2 hole.
The Eagles began digging out from the deficit by scoring a four-run inning in the top of the fifth.
The Panthers responded to pad their lead with a lone run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth.
The 9-6 deficit facing Holden in the top of the seventh was overtaken by the Eagles on a bases-loaded single from Von Wehmeyer that plated Kauffman, a ground ball from Lane Spoor-Wright that scored Skyler Willis and Justin Brown, and a sacrifice fly from Gavin Kitscher that allowed Wehmeyer to score.
Holden’s 10-9 lead taken on Wehmeyer’s score on the sacrifice fly from Kitscher would hold through the bottom of the seventh as Willis pitched in relief for a ground out, and two strikeouts with one base runner reaching for Knob Noster on a Holden error.
At the plate for Holden, Tucker Kauffman had 2 hits and 2 RBIs, Cohen Drake and Von Wehmeyer each had 2 hits and 1 RBI, and Justin Brown had 1 hit and 1 RBI. Drake Gard, Wes Brown, and Skyler Willis each had 1 hit. Gavin Kitscher had 1 RBI.
Eagle starting pitcher Wes Brown went two innings, allowed 4 runs, 2 hits, and 6 walks while striking out 3 batters.
Relief pitchers Dylan Cornwell, Von Wehmeyer, Tucker Kauffman, and Willis combined to pitch 5 innings behind Brown. Cornwell pitched for 5 strikeouts in 2 innings of relief, Wehmeyer had 1 strikeout, and Willis recorded 2 strikeouts to close out the game with a scoreless seventh inning of work.
At the end of last week, the Holden baseball team held an overall record of 3-3, and stood at 2-0 in MRVC-East games.
The Holden baseball team hosts Warsaw on Wednesday, Apr. 8 with a varsity game starting at 5 p.m. and a JV game to follow.
Holden hosts Adrian on Thursday, Apr. 9 with a varsity game starting at 4:30 p.m. and a JV game to follow.
The Eagles host the Holden Baseball Tournament next week Monday, Apr. 13 – Friday, Apr. 17. Game times and opponents are TBD.
