Nellie Jane Hutchings

Nellie Jane Hutchings 90, of Holden, MO passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2023, surrounded by family.

Jane was born December 27, 1932, in Gunn City, Missouri. She was one of 13 children born to Harold (Pug) and Doris Hyatt.

Jane attended Gunn City grade school graduating from Latour High School in 1950. Some of her fondest memories were playing basketball during high school.

After graduation she moved to Kansas City to live with her grandmother McLear while working.
She was united in marriage to Henry Hutchings, March 12, 1951, in Gunn City. In January 1953, Henry was drafted into the army where he served two years taking them to Colorado and Kentucky before moving back to the Latour area where they lived the remainder of their lives.

Henry worked construction; Jane took care of the cattle. She always had a milk cow up till her declining health. She could nurse back the sickest of calves and spent many summers bottle feeding 30-50 calves. After Henry retired, they enjoyed many early mornings fishing for crappie at Truman Lake.

Jane was a hard worker and always had the best-looking garden in the Latour area. She took a lot of pride in her cattle, garden and family. Family time was getting together to pluck chickens, freeze corn, canning tomatoes, and green beans.

Sunday dinner was a weekly tradition where family gathered to enjoy her good cooking with some of the family favorites being fried chicken, homemade chicken and noodles and angel food cake as well as in the summer wilted lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes from her garden. Jane’s kitchen table was a regular meeting spot for family and neighbors to stop in and have a glass of sweet tea that she brewed every morning.

Flowers were also a hobby of Jane’s. Her yard was always filled with color with some of her favorites being Iris’s, blue morning glories or the bed of zinnias that surrounded her 6-foot rooster in the front yard.
