Following multiple competitive matches in a back-and-forth MRVC-East meet at Lexington High School, the Minutewomen emerged on top versus the Holden girls wrestling team in the team score by a final of 42-33 Thursday, Jan. 29.
“We were fully exposed at Lexington, but that dual had some outstanding matches” said Holden girls wrestling coach Ron Franklin in regard to the team’s underclassmen still gaining mat experience.
The Lady Eagles totaled their team score with head-to-head wins by pin from Macey Greene in the 110-pound match, Addi Brooks in the 115-pound match, and Haley Brooks in the 120-pound match.
Lady Eagle wrestler Ady Yoder maintained a lead in her 125-pound match and strategically worked to hold on for a win by decision in an 8-5 final score.
“With Haley’s performance at 120, I literally was getting ready to forfeit and she overrode me and went out and beat a very good girl from Lexington,” said coach Franklin. “Ady gutted out her match at 125 with some serious physical ailments. She was at 125 because she made weight and Mila (Turpin) was .1 pound over. Mila then wrestled at 130 against a very good girl. That night and what happened with Ady was the best possible scenario we could have to set the matches up to win. Hayden (Wright) was sick, so McKenna (Hartsell) wrestled at 105. Therefore, the actual dual outcome was in the hands of five freshman. We got one pin and got pinned four times.”
Lady Eagle senior wrestler Bobbie Diibon stepped on the mat to take a win by forfeit at 155 pounds with the victory marking the 100th win of her three-year high school wrestling career.
“Bobbie’s 100th win was very anti-climatic because it came on a open,” said coach Franklin. “It was an opportunity to get the milestone win without too much stress. She did not start wrestling until she was a sophomore, so 100 wins in three years is a pretty good milestone to reach.”
Also adding a win by forfeit was Lady Eagle sophomore Taylor Hubbard in the 170-pound weight class.
