The Holden Lady Eagles track and field team placed first to claim the team title at the MRVC-East Track and Field Meet held at Higginsville High School Friday, May 2.
The Holden girls team totaled 140 points versus Lexington’s 130 second-place team score in the six-team competition as top-three finishes earn conference medals, top-six placings earn team points, and top-five relay finishes add to the team points totals.
“It was a close team race all the way through,” said Holden track and field coach David Diener. “We knew we had to put our best efforts in lots of events to secure our team’s victory. Lexington, Knob and Higginsville all have really good strengths as a track team, but we were able to score enough to hold them all off. Everyone came out and did their job, but we had some individuals really show well to ensure we got the conference title.”
Individual event titles were earned by Lady Eagle athletes Addy Campbell, Brionna Johnson, Kia Harmon, and Addi Wooster with Campbell and Johnson totaling two first-place finishes. The Holden girls 4x400m relay team of Campbell, Callie Irr, Abby Miller, and Addi Wooster added a relay title with a first-place showing to close out the meet.
“Our list of conference champions is a very impressive list,” said coach Diener. “We have had lots of different lineups all year, but this group continues to be big impacts in all of our meets. In order to win a conference title we had to count on all of them to perform to their best and they did!”
Junior runner Addy Campbell collected her two individual titles by winning both the 400m dash and the 800m run. Campbell clocked out at 1:00.45 in the 400 to claim her third career MRVC-East title in the race.
“The 400, I feel like that’s been my race over my whole high school career, so three-peating here, definitely a huge accomplishment…great competition,” said Campbell. “I’m very thankful for the opportunities that track allows me to be in, and just this community that track has created it’s amazing. Also, being out here watching the younger generation that’s going to come up and be on our team is just so fun.”
Campbell timed out at 2:27 in the 800m run, just three days after setting the Holden school record in the 800 distance.
“After that 400, I was cooked,” said Campbell. “I’ll be honest with you. Sickness, going through it right now, but you know, it was just a mental challenge, body wasn’t feeling the best, but these races, if you’re mentally tough, you can get through anything. I think I have the edge on people. I feel like I’m very mentally prepared and tough for races like these, so I’m very happy that I have been able to be in the 800 now. It’s definitely a new event that I can be good in for my team.”
The 4x400m relay team of sophomore Callie Irr, junior Abby Miller, junior Addi Wooster, and Campbell on the last leg turned in a season-best time of 4:16 in its first-place finish.
“In the four-by-four, I’m just so glad that we finally found a team that has put together amazing times, and you know getting the PR tonight is just so great,” said Campbell. “I’m so happy for each and every one of my teammates. I thought Callie ran great tonight. Addi Wooster finished so freaking hard. I was worried that last 100. I was like, ‘Oh goodness, this is going to be close,’ and then she pulled away about the last 50 meters. And then Abby, I’m just so glad that you know she was able to come out here and do an amazing job. I’m just so thankful that they put me in that position to go and be great.”
Sophomore thrower Brionna Johnson took title finishes in both shot put and discus. Johnson recorded a distance of 11.12m in the shot, and notched a discus throw of 32.18m.
Senior jumper Kia Harmon claimed the high jump title with a first-place height of 1.6m, and added runner-up finishes in both long jump and triple jump. Harmon went 4.83m in the long jump pit and triple jumped 10.53m to record the silver medal finishes.
Junior pole vaulter Addi Wooster claimed the vault title by clearing a first-place height of 3.05m.
Sophmore pole vaulter Macie McDaniel recorded the runner-up finish in the event by clearing 2.74m.
Senior Lillee Keller recorded the runner-up finish in the 100m hurdles with a second-place time of 17.15 seconds as sophomore Arionna Johnson placed third with a time of 17.16 seconds.
Keller added two third-place medal finishes by taking third in high jump with a height of 1.45m, and placing third in triple jump with a distance of 10.19m. Keller collected team points in a fourth-place finish in long jump at a distance of 4.61m.
Arionna Johnson placed sixth in the 300m hurdles with a time of 54.37 seconds.
Fourth-place finishes were turned in by both the Holden girls 4×100 relay team and the 4x800m relay team.
Irr, junior Macey Greene, Arionna Johnson, and Harmon composed the Lady Eagle 4×100 team as that group carried the baton to its fourth-place finish in a time of 53.82 seconds.
Irr added an individual points finish by placing sixth in the 100m dash in a time of 14.17 seconds.
The Holden girls 4x800m relay team of senior Ava Young, junior Malea Brewington, sophomore Madi Talley, and freshman Jessy Stringer clocked a time of 11:32 in its fourth-place finish.
Individually, Brewington placed sixth in the 3200m with a time of 13:36.
In field events, junior Clara Ferguson placed fourth in javelin with a throw of 29.69m as junior Olivia Wooster took sixth in javelin with a toss of 25.65m.
“Lilee Keller and Arionna Johnson had big nights scoring points for us,” noted coach Diener. “I was also proud of our sprint group that was able to get points in our relays, Macey Greene, Haley Brooks, Callie Irr, K’Lea Westover, then Ava Young, Malea Brewington, Madisyn Talley, and Jessy stringer for their effort in the 4×800. Without those performances we wouldn’t have been able to get the extra 10 points to ensure our conference titles.”
The Holden high school track and field teams compete next at the Class 3, District 7 Track and Field Meet this Saturday, May 5, with Holden High School serving as host for the meet.
