Holden high school track and field team members Masyn Powell, Kia Harmon, and Addy Campbell competed at the 2024 Kansas Relays at Rock Chalk Park on the University of Kansas in Lawrence Friday, Apr. 19, and Saturday, Apr. 20.

Powell in two hurdles races and Harmon in two jump events made repeat appearances in individual events at this year’s meet as Campbell returned this season after qualifying as a relay team member for Holden last year.

Harmon earned her second career Kansas Relays medal finish to highlight Holden’s representation at this year’s meet.

“Kia got to compete in long jump and high jump,” said Holden track and field coach David Diener. “It was cold and tough conditions on Saturday morning for jumping.”

Harmon placed fourth in the high jump by recording a height of 5’-1” during competition on Saturday, as she improved upon her fifth-place finish in the event last year during her sophomore season.

Harmon also competed in the long jump on Saturday, placing 25th in the event with a jump of 15’-5.75”.

“She had some good jumps in long jump against some tough competition, but she was able to hit opening height clean in high jump which allowed her to win some tie breakers,” said coach Diener.

Powell ran in both the 110m hurdles and 300m hurdles preliminary races on Friday.

The four-year Holden team member and Holden school record holder in the 110m hurdles timed out at 17.90 seconds in the 110m hurdles preliminary race on Friday. Powell’s time placed him 38th overall in the event in his second time competing in the 110m hurdles at the KU Relays.

In the 300m hurdles prelims on Friday, Powell turned in a time of 41.33 seconds to place 30th overall as he made his first-ever appearance in the long hurdles race at KU.

Campbell returned to the Kansas Relays after qualifying last season as a member of Holden’s 4x400m relay team which lost the opportunity to compete due to weather conditions.

Campbell earned an individual qualification for the meet in the 400m dash this season. The sophomore timed out at 1:01.28 in her 400m dash preliminary race on Friday to place 24th overall.

“Masyn and Addy qualifying for KU is a testament for how great their season has been so far,” said Holden track and field coach David Diener. “Both were able to get great experience running in races, and that experience is going to pay off for them in the high-pressure state series meets here in May.”
