Ruth Hammond

Ruth Hammond, passed away peacefully on July, 13, 2023, at Holden Manor at the age of 91. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by family and friends.

Ruth was born on May 5, 1932, in Chilhowee, Missouri, the daughter of Roy and Sarah (Sadie) Dameron.
She married Ira Hammond in 1953. Shortly after they married, they moved to the Holden community. Hammond Hill was filled with love and activity as she kept up with two children, a career, and busy farm life. Ruth and Ira had recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Ruth graduated from Central Missouri State College with a degree in Elementary Education. Following graduation, she taught in one-room rural schools and in urban school districts. When she retired in 1988, Ruth had acquired a Master’s Degree and was an elementary school principal. Through teaching and administration, she touched the lives of students and teachers and supported the community with her commitment to learning. Ruth also held offices in professional education organizations during her career.

Ruth delighted in many hobbies. She loved sewing, reading, photography, traveling, and playing on her computer. After retirement, Ruth participated in several community organizations including the local 4-Ms Club, DAR, United Methodist Women, and Shakespeare Club. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and helped create many beautiful quilts for the annual Harvest Sale.

Above all else, Saturday night dances with her husband and activities with her family were her most treasured times.

Ruth is survived by her spouse, Ira; two children, Melanie Snider and Samuel Hammond (Carolyn); eight grandchildren, Sarah Gould (David), Casey Kloeckener (Heaven), Libby Snider, Jeff Snider (Laurie), William Snider (Brooke), Benjamin Hammond (Stefanie), Caitlin Hammond, and Elise Buchheit (Mark); and 14 great-grandchildren, Dylan Gould, Shayla Gould, Savannah Gould, Delaney Gould, Bennett Kloeckener, Easton Kloeckener, Emma Grepgory, Zachary Snider, Hadley Snider, Harrison Snider, Boston Hammond, Kingsley Hammond, Avery Mena and Barrett Buchheit . She is preceded in death by her parents, and son-in-law, Gerald (Jerry) Snider.

Visitation was from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, July 16 at Williams Funeral Chapel in Holden. A Funeral service to celebrate Ruth’s was held on Monday, July 17 at 10:30 a.m. at Holden United Methodist Church, with burial following at Carpenter Cemetery, Chilhowee.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Holden United Methodist Church, 605 E 10th Street, Holden, MO 64040 in Ruth’s honor.
