Authorities Dispose Of Explosive Materials In Nearby Strasburg

Fireworks displays are common this time of the year, with numerous ones taking place both before and after July 4 celebrations.

But, one that was both unplanned and unexpected, took place in nearby Strasburg Tuesday, July 22, when authorities disposed of recently discovered pyrotechnics and other explosive materials.

The occurence took place after family members found the materials when clearing out the home of former Strasburg resident, Jeffery Johnson. Johnson had passed away about a month before.

Not aware of how dangerous the materials might be or how to properly dispose of them, they contacted Cass County officials.

In response, emergency crews arrived on the scene at approximately 11:30 a.m.. The Pleasant Hill Fire Department was the first agency to arrive at the location on Mill Street, near State Highway E.

Shortly thereafter, residents on the block near the home were evacuated and all roads in the nearby area were closed for an investigation.

According to reports, a spokesperson for the Cass County sheriff’s office said that nitrate, which is commonly used for fireworks, in addition to Class B fireworks, were found in the home.
