It is often said that the wife/mother is the backbone of a family. Our pioneering ancestors were strong in body and mind. They needed that strength to establish homes, farms and villages from raw land. They needed to be strong in spirit and mindfulness to overcome the hardships encountered by an emerging society in taming the wilderness and the cruelty of the times.
Nowhere is that more pronounced than during the Civil War in the Border War area. By 1861 and the official beginning of the Civil War, the wilderness of Jackson County and the Lone Jack area was tamed. Many pockets of Southern sympathizers lived in the county, especially around Lone Jack.
The war’s impending crisis laid the trail to a heartbreaking day for Nancy Cave and her family.
