R-III Board Informed Tax Rate Should Not Change

Information about a tax rate hearing was given by R-III Superintendent Dr. Mike Hough preceding the regular meeting of the Board of Friday, Aug. 15.

Hough projected the tax rate would remain unchanged from the previous year at a total rate of $4.59. He stated the county assessed valuation was showing a projected increase of approximately $6,615,250 which would generate $243,481 in additional operating funds for the District. No concerns or questions were voiced.

After the regular meeting opened Gerilynn Hoover was recognized with a certificate for completion of the State required New Board Member Training.

In communications Sarah Burks and Buffie McConville reported on the Eagles Nest, Head Start, P.A.T., and Early Childhood Special Education programs.

Burks said P.A.T. went from two part-time teachers to one full time teacher this year.

She added Head Start is operating with four returning students and potentially three to six more qualifying this year.
The Eagles Nest, she said, currently has 30 students enrolled and then reviewed kindergarten screening data with board members.

She also updated the Board on the new State Kindergarten Readiness requirements.

In the Superintendent’s report, Dr. Hough shared an MSBA August video highlighting the back to school challenges for schools, a review of the Success Ready Students workgroup, MSBA Advocacy and Awards discussion and reminders about the upcoming annual conference the School Safety Summit.

Georgia Jarman also explained the importance of the MSBA Board delegate’s/alternate’s role with pending legislation.
Other points highlighted included summer school enrollment data, which showed 399 students in the first session, and 400 students in the second session.
